Diagnostic Ultrasound Scanning
See What’s Going on Inside
Diagnostic ultrasound scanning is a safe and effective way to get an immediate, real-time look at the cause of your pain or injury. It’s a key tool in modern musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapy, allowing us to provide faster, more accurate diagnoses and create highly targeted treatment plans.

What is Diagnostic Ultrasound?
Often called “point of care ultrasound” (POCUS), this technology uses high-frequency sound waves to create live images of the soft tissues inside your body. It’s the same technology used for pregnancy scans, but our specialised equipment is designed to look at muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and joints.
During the scan, a small probe is placed on the skin’s surface over the area of concern. The sound waves bounce off the internal structures and are converted into a detailed, moving image on a screen. This allows your physiotherapist to see exactly what’s happening as you move, giving a dynamic view of your condition.
In depth look at diagnostic ultrasound
Why is it so useful in physiotherapy?
Immediate & Accurate Diagnosis: Unlike traditional scans where you have to wait for an appointment and then wait for the results, a diagnostic ultrasound scan provides immediate insight. This real-time visual information significantly increases diagnostic accuracy.
No Radiation: As a non-invasive technique, ultrasound scanning doesn’t use any radiation, making it completely safe and suitable for repeated use without any side effects.
Dynamic Assessment: We can see how your tissues are moving and functioning during specific actions. For example, we can watch a tendon glide (or not glide) as you move your joint, or see a muscle contract. This provides a level of detail that other imaging techniques can’t.
Guides Treatment & Rehabilitation: The precise diagnosis from a scan helps us select the most effective treatment for you. This might include targeted exercise, manual therapy, or even guiding procedures like injections or dry needling to the exact location of the injured tissue.
Conditions We Can Assess with Ultrasound
Diagnostic ultrasound is highly effective for a wide range of MSK conditions throughout the body (excluding the spine, neck, and head), including:
Shoulder: Rotator cuff tears, tendinopathy, and bursitis.
Wrist & Hand: Carpal tunnel syndrome and tendon issues.
Knee: Ligament injuries, patellar tendinopathy, and fluid build-up (effusions).
Muscle Injuries: Strains, tears, and soft tissue masses.
Elbow: Tennis and golfer’s elbow, as well as ligament and tendon injuries.
Hip: Tendinopathies and muscle injuries.
Ankle & Foot: Achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, and ligament sprains.
Diagnostic ultrasound Scanning
Your Appointment
A diagnostic ultrasound scan is quick, painless, and performed right here in the clinic as part of your comprehensive physiotherapy assessment. After the scan, your physiotherapist will explain the findings clearly and discuss a personalised treatment plan with you to get you back to normal as quickly as possible.
See Inside Your Injury in Real-Time
Diagnostic Ultrasound provides immediate, precise insights into musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, accelerating your diagnosis and recovery.
What is Diagnostic Ultrasound Scanning (DUS)?
DUS uses safe, high-frequency sound waves to create a live video of your internal soft tissues. Your physiotherapist uses a small probe on your skin to get a dynamic view of your muscles, tendons, and ligaments as you move, offering a level of detail other scans can't match.
